ATLS 4519-008: Studio: Time

Course Description

Studio: Time is a hands-on course focused on the creation of time-based works and projects that explore themes and notions of time. Utilizing a research-based creative process, students will explore time-keeping methods throughout history and learn modern computational methods for working with time as material.

Long-term production projects will include software-based clocks, mechanical timepieces, and interactive temporal works. This is a highly collaborative, production heavy course intended for students who already have strong technical skills in computation, physical computing, and fabrication. This course builds heavily on the material covered in Code and Object.

Course Objectives

Students who successfully complete this course will:

Critical Thinking & Theory / History:
  • Research the history of time-keeping methods and devices.
  • Study contemporary creative technology projects that implement time-based methods and/or notions of time in unique and impactful ways.
  • Explore the subjective human experience of time from a psychological and cognitive perspective.
  • Think critically about the ways that technology has influenced the cycles and rhythms of modern life.
Design/Creative:
  • Design products, exhibitions, and experiences that expand and/or shift notions of time.
  • Implement design concepts using an iterative design process.
  • Learn to prototype and build interactive works at varying levels of fidelity.
  • Create engaging interactions using time as material.
Technical:
  • Learn computational methods for keeping track of time.
  • Build mechanical time-keeping devices.
  • Create tools and experiences that keep and/or express time in unique ways using hardware, software, and/or dynamic media elements.
